For Sale – 1978 Ferrari 308 GTB (Steel, Dry Sump, Euro Spec) – The One Enthusiasts Ask Me to Recommend
Another special car… and a rare chance to own the 308 GTB spec I always tell people is the sweet spot.
Everyone asks me: “What’s the best all-round Ferrari to actually own and enjoy?”
My answer is always the same: a steel-bodied, dry-sump 308 GTB euro-spec.
Why this spec matters
- Dry sump = the best engine setup. Stronger crankcase vacuum, more stable oiling, a touch more power, and you can feel and even hear the difference.
- Euro-spec = more power again over the US cars.
- Steel body = the one you actually want. Infinitely better built than the earlier Vetroresina cars. The panel gaps, shut lines, and definition are sharper and more consistent—night and day.
About this particular car
A stunning Argento 308 GTB with the desirable steel/dry-sump/euro combo, equipped with:
- Deep front spoiler
- Wide wheels (all 5)
- Air conditioning
- Electric antenna
- Quad-tip stainless sports exhaust
- Later-production electronic ignition (reliable, low-maintenance)
Delivered new in August ’78. In Australia by 1982 with books stamped by John Allen and others. It spent only a short time in the UK before coming here—no corrosion now or ever in the 10+ years I’ve known it.
Owned long-term by a respected Australian race engineer and now another well-known historic racing figure. Looked after properly its whole life, including by me.
Condition
The car is in excellent mechanical condition and will receive a fresh service prior to handover so the new owner can drive away without hesitation.
Cosmetically, it’s honest:
A few minor items—steering wheel, gear knob, some interior tidying—have already been factored into the price. Nothing major, nothing structural, nothing tricky.
Why buy it?
Because these don’t come up often, and when they do, you usually wish you’d moved quicker. This is the best specification, in the best colour, and with a documented, corrosion-free life.
